Flight of the Heart is an unpublished book based on a true story.
This coming-of-age tale about falling in love and following your heart tackles the question, is love fated or is it a choice? Noelle’s always reading the universe for signs. The dangerous world of Naval aviation plays a pivotal role in her life choices. The problem is, the universe is giving her mixed signals. Newly graduated from college and a self-proclaimed pacifist from Portland, Noelle leaves for Naval Air Station Whidbey Island to keep her pregnant friend, Cassidy, company during her husband’s military deployment. Noelle is supposed to be back to her hometown and college sweetheart in six months. In the backdrop of the raucous single life of naval officers in the 1990s, her story takes a twist when she meets handsome, soft spoken, Brad, an Intruder jet pilot.
The Top Gun-flipped narrative offers a sometimes-playful window into the gendered military culture of Navy jet flying from the perspective of the one left at home. Noelle’s introspection as a professor of communication makes sense of this real-life love triangle challenging oversimplified ideas around romantic relationships.
